December 17

The morning started with a swim at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. We needed to get in a swim for the USAT NCC, so we thought this would be a fun place to do it. It's a YMCA with Ian Thorpe's name on it. The facility is gorgeous. We saw a few other cool pools that we could have swam in, but they were outside venues. We had spent enough time gooped up in suncreen that we didn't want to swim in a magnifying glass. :)

After some light shopping and relaxing we got ready for our "Evening of Romance." No, it's not what you might think... We had scheduled an afternoon flight out to Hunter Valley (the Napa Valley of NSW). Once out to Hunter Valley, we were taken to a winery for a tasting. Of course we found several wines that we had to bring back to AK with us!! Then we were off (somewhat stumbling) to dinner at a restaurant next door. After dinner we were picked up and taken back to the "airport." Leaving Hunter Valley the sky was beautiful. We could see so many stars and enjoy Christmas lights from above. The flight turned sour after about 20 minutes though, as we flew into heavy cloud cover. Our pilot needed quite a bit of help from air traffic control to get back to the general aviation airport. Cheryl was somewhat thankful that she didn't understand much of what was being said (what she could hear through the headset). The flight really wasn't bad or bumpy, just a bit unsettling when the pilot says that he can't see the airport.
